Avalan Technology
Avalan Technology acquired by Computer Associates
NOV 20, 1997, M2 Communications - Computer Associates
International, Inc. (CA) today announced that
it has purchased all of the assets of privately-held
Avalan Technology, Inc., developer of the Remotely
Possible/32 family of remote control software
for Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 3.x. Financial
terms were not disclosed.
Avalan technology expands CA's extensive portfolio
of management options that leverage the Internet
and strengthens the company's position as a leading
provider of secure, high-speed mobile computing
solutions. CA will remote control-enable its entire
line of client/server software, including ARCserve
and InocuLAN, and will offer remote control options
for Unicenter TNG and Paradigm Service Desk.
"The acquisition of Avalan marks another
step forward in CA's commitment to lowering the
total cost of ownership across the distributed
enterprise," said Jeff Finkle, CA vice president.
"By incorporating Avalan technology into
the CA product family, our clients-as well as
our own technical support specialists-can greatly
increase the responsiveness of supporting remote
users while lowering overall costs."
The Avalan technology provides full remote control
capabilities of any PC or NT server via network
access, dial-up or via the Internet. Network managers
can access both PCs and servers running on Windows
95 or NT for remote desktop support, server administration
and end-user training.
"This acquisition is a great addition for
Unicenter TNG and for ARCserve," said Paul
Mason, vice president, infrastructure software
research at International Data Corp. "Remotely
Possible will provide excellent remote control
facilities that will enable IT departments to
more efficiently apply their human resources to
whatever tasks they have at hand, without being
limited by distance or connectivity."
All Avalan associates have been welcomed into
the CA family, and the company's operations will
remain in Massachusetts.
"With CA's backing, we will be able to continue
offering customers the most advanced remote management
software there is," said former Avalan president
Anthony Amundson, who has joined CA as vice president
of development and site manager. "Our combined
products and technologies will be extended to
a broader range of clients around the world, and
the synergies between the product lines will bring
tremendous benefits to clients."
About Remotely Possible
Remotely Possible increases the productivity of
network administrators and help desk professionals,
as well as the users they support. Providing the
ability to fully control a network server remotely,
Remotely Possible enables administrators to save
critical time by installing new software, viewing
performance monitors, rebooting systems, and editing
registries from off-site desktops. The software
also makes it easier to manage remote Windows
clients and solutions, and train and support remote
users.
Remotely Possible's "one-to-many" architecture
allows operators to monitor multiple PCs for quality
assurance. Its "many-to-one" functionality
enables an administrator's system to be viewed
by multiple operators simultaneously.
Help desk professionals can support off-site
PC clients by trouble-shooting and training users
remotely - taking control of their keyboards and
sharing their screens as required. In addition,
one or more PC users can view a common host PC
for the purpose of group viewing and instruction.
As a transport-independent solution,
Remotely Possible operates over TCP/IP, IPX,
NetBIOS and direct modem dial, providing full
functionality across LANS, WANs, modems and the
Internet. Remotely Possible has continually earned
high marks from leading IT trade publications.
Most recently, it was awarded the "Best of
LAN Times" in a head-to-head product comparison
of remote control software.

NOV 20, 1997, M2 Communications - Extending the
reach of Unicenter TNG to manage "everything
from anywhere" by providing centralized control
of remote resources, Computer Associates International,
Inc. (CA) today announced the Unicenter TNG Remote
Control Option.
The new software is based on the Remotely Possible/32
family of products from Avalan Technology, Inc.,
whose assets have been purchased by CA.
The Unicenter TNG Remote Control Option reduces
the time and cost for problem resolution on remote
systems. It provides comprehensive, high performance
control capability for clients and servers in
any location. This increases service levels and
reduces staffing needed for remote systems.
"Until today, remote management of desktop
IT assets occurred in isolation from the rest
of an organization's management environment,"
said Jeff Finkle, CA vice president. "Now
our clients can add powerful remote management
capabilities to Unicenter TNG's stable of end-to-end
enterprise management solutions to drive down
the painful cost of ownership of remotely-managed
systems."
The Unicenter TNG Remote Control Option's "one-to-many"
architecture allows operators to monitor multiple
PCs for quality assurance. Its "many-to-one"
functionality enables an administrator's system
to be viewed by multiple operators simultaneously.
The Remote Control Option is tightly integrated
with Unicenter TNG and its options. Benefits of
integration include:
Help Desk -- allows help desk administrators
to conveniently resolve users' technical problems
remotely, thereby avoiding travel costs.
Software Delivery -- empowers administrators
to manually inspect a local hard disk to directly
locate a problem, in the event of software delivery
failure.
Asset Management -- allows managers to effectively
remove unauthorized software installations detected
by Unicenter TNG's Asset Management Option.
Remote Console Management -- allows authorized
administrators to take control of Unicenter TNG
consoles from remote machines, extending Unicenter
TNG's "manage from anywhere" capabilities.
Data Transport -- allows companies transporting
data from off-site locations during off hours
to configure settings and correct problems, saving
time and money.
The Unicenter TNG Remote Control Option provides
the ability to fully control a network server
remotely, enabling administrators to change configurations,
view performance monitors, reboot systems, and
edit registries off-site. Help desk professionals
can efficiently support PC clients by trouble-shooting
and performing other manual intervention remotely.
"We've been using Avalan's Remotely Possible
for the last year and it is easily the best product
out there. The combination of CA and Avalan is
a good move that will greatly benefit both companies,"
said Mike Pearson, director of systems and technology,
Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
As a transport independent solution, the Unicenter
TNG Remote Control Option operates over TCP/IP,
IPX, NetBIOS and direct modem dial, providing
full functionality across LANS, WANs, modems and
the Internet. Platforms supported include Windows
NT (Intel and Alpha), Windows 95, Windows 3.1
and DOS.
Unicenter TNG is an integrated enterprise management
solution that enables organizations to manage
all IT resources, encompassing heterogeneous networks,
systems, applications, and databases. It provides
comprehensive end-to-end enterprise management
for TCP/IP, SNA, IPX/SPX and DECnet networks,
and 40 platforms including desktops, Windows NT,
UNIX, AS/400, NetWare and mainframe environments.
Unicenter TNG is the only fully integrated management
solution covering network discovery, topology,
performance, events and status, security, software
distribution, storage, workload, help desk, change
management and other functions for traditional
and distributed computing environments, as well
as for the Internet and intranets. Unicenter TNG's
intelligent manager/agent technology delivers
highly scalable management of the entire computing
environment, including hardware and software.
